The beauty of caravanning lies in its flexibility. If you stumble upon a top spot, you can extend your stay, or if the weather takes a turn, you can move on to another exciting destination. Nonetheless, it helps to start with a plan.

We’ve put together the ultimate guide for your Northern Territory caravan adventure that’ll take you from Alice Springs to Litchfield National Park, less than a two-hour drive from Darwin. Feel free to adapt the route as you discover the territory’s natural wonders, rich culture and stunning views along the way.

Day One of Your Northern Territory Caravan Adventure

Driving time: 5 hours

Our iconic itinerary takes in over 3000km of sealed roads. You’ll experience the magic of Uluru, enjoy the waterholes of the MacDonell Ranges and crisscross the Red Centre before reaching the magical ancient forests of Litchfield National Park.

We’re going to begin in Alice Springs and then head south towards Uluru. En route, you’ll pass Mount Conner, which locals sometimes refer to as “Fool-uru” or “Fuluru” because tourists often confuse it with its mighty cousin.

When you reach Yulara, you can’t miss Uluru. There are plenty of tours on offer, from camel rides to scenic flights. You could then head back to Yulara and spend the night at the Ayers Rock Resort’s campground.

Day 2

Driving time: 3 hours 30 minutes

Head north towards Watarrka National Park where you can explore Kings Canyon with its sandstone walls. The Rim Walk boasts panoramic views of the red desert. This 6km loop takes up to four hours to complete. Marvel at the palm-filled crevices of the Garden of Eden.

After an action-packed day, head for Kathleen Springs. More off the beaten track, it offers a great opportunity to appreciate the variety of flora and fauna in the outback. You can’t park up overnight in Watarrka National Park, with the official NT website recommending a stay at Kings Canyon Resort.

 Day 3

Driving time: 5 hours 15 minutes

Heading back in the direction of Alice Springs, check out the desert waterholes of Ellery Creek, Ormiston Gorge and Redbank Gorge. After passing through Alice Springs again, you’ll be on the final stretch towards Gemtree. This is where you’ll find the country’s central gemfields, the most northerly vineyard and the excellent Gemtree Caravan Park.

Day 4

Driving time: 5 hours 30 minutes

Continuing your Northern Territory Caravan Adventure, you’ll take the Stuart Highway northbound and stop off for a break at Wycliff Well Roadhouse. It’s built a reputation as being the home of extra-terrestrial sightings. A bit further north, you should make time to see the beautiful Karlu Karlu or Devil’s Marbles. You can learn more about these ancient sacred granite boulders before heading to Tennant Creek, which has its own caravan park.

Day 5

Driving time: 2 hours 40 minutes

After a quick visit to the Battery Hill Mining Centre to learn about the history of the area’s gold diggers, our Nothern Territory caravan adventure continues to Elliott and the Midland Caravan Park, the official midway point between Darwin and Alice Springs.

Day 6

Driving time: 7 hours

This is the longest drive of the trip. You’ll be heading toward the gateway to the Gulf region and the remote fishing community of Borroloola. Check out the views along the way and make time to stop at the Bullwaddy Conservation Reserve, home to the bush stone-curlew, giant frog and spectacled hare-wallaby.

There’ll be time for a visit to Limmen National Park and cool off at Butterfly Falls. We’d recommend a stay at Borooloola McArthur River Caravan Park.

Day 7

Driving time: 5 hours 40 minutes

Today, you’ll be heading to Daly Waters. Take a rest stop at Caranbirini Conservation Reserve and stroll through the impressive sandstone pillars.

Once a refuelling stop for early Qantas flights to Singapore, Daly Waters is famous for its aviation history, more recently used as an operational base for military manoeuvres. You could spend the night by parking up at the Daly Waters Pub. Enjoy some grilled barramundi or wagyu rump in the pub’s restaurant.

Day 8

Driving time: 3 hours

Today’s drive will take in the natural hot springs known as Mataranka Thermal Pool and the incredible limestone Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park.

While in Katherine, hire a canoe and check out the dramatic cliffs at Nitmiluk Gorge. Tonight, you’ll be staying at the Boab Caravan Park, with its boutique style and gorgeous landscaped gardens.

Day 9

Driving time: 3 hours 10 minutes

As you hurtle towards the last leg of your Northern Territory Caravan Adventure, begin with a drive north to the ancient landscape of Kakadu National Park. Stop off at the Maguk Waterfall, where you’ll find a crystal-clear bathing pool after a short walk through the monsoonal forest.

No visit would be complete without making time for the Ubirr walk, where you’ll witness one of the country’s most famous Aboriginal rock art galleries. Park up for the night at the Aurora Kakadu Lodge, with its stunning tropical gardens.
